BOSTON—FitzGerald Communications has named Stephen Astle, formerly a vice president with Applied Communications, to assume leadership of the agency’s West Coast operation. He replaces John Berard, who left the firm recently to head the Bay Area office of PR21.

Astle has more than 16 years of experience working with leading brands such as Cisco, Oracle, AltaVista, Hewlett Packard, Genentech and Autodesk.

“Our West Coast presence is very strategic to our business and calls for a leader in-tune with client demands and the overall market situation,” said Maura FitzGerald, agency founder and CEO. “While our interview process yielded many qualified candidates, Steve stood out for his exceptional background in strategic communications for some of the industry’s leading technology brands and for his ability to use communications to create competitive advantage for his clients.”

Prior to Applied, Astle was an account director and partner in Phase Two Strategies, a San Francisco-based public relations consultancy serving information technology companies.

“In the current market environment agencies need to do more than just raise awareness, they must also be responsible for demand generation,” said Astle. “This notion of accountability is part of FitzGerald’s corporate culture and attracted me to it, along with the agency’s innovative programs and measurement methodology.”
