COLOGNE—Leading German independent firm fischerAppelt has appointed Frank Behrendt, former chief executive of Ketchum Pleon Germany to its management board, where he will oversee the firm’s public relations department and will be responsible for establishing a new operation in the Northern Rhine-Westphalia region, which includes the cities of Cologne, Bonn, Dusseldorf and Essen.

fischerAppelt is one of the three largest public relations firms in Germany, with offices in Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart and Vienna and fees of around $36 million last year. The public relations operations, fischerAppelt relations, work alongside subsidiaries focused on financial communications, management consultancy, advertising, design and video production.

Behrendt will become the third member of the management board, working alongside agency founders and board members Andreas Fischer-Appelt and Bernhard Fischer-Appelt, as of February 1, 2011.

"Frank Behrendt is a heavyweight in this industry,” says Bernhard Fischer-Appelt. “With him, we can take the next steps towards becoming the market leader."

Behrendt is a former journalist who worked for Ketchum Pleon for more than a decade, most recently as CEO for the German business. Prior to that, he was director of marketing, promotion and merchandising at RTL Television, and managing director of Universal Family Entertainment.
