BOSTON—FitzGerald Communications has named Jesse Ciccone to the newly created position of vice president, life sciences. The move marks an expansion of the firm’s biotechnology unit into a more formalized life sciences practice that will work with biotech and biopharmaceutical organizations as well as technology companies providing solutions directly to the life sciences industry.

At the same time, the firm announced that its selection as agency of record by Axiom Systems, a leading system integrator for the managed care industry.

“Our focus on biotechnology began years ago as a logical extension of our work in the IT sector,” said Maura FitzGerald, agency founder and CEO. “As that market has matured and expanded, so has the profile of the companies finding us attractive. Jesse Ciccone was an original member of the team at Corixa, our first biotech client, and he quickly stood out as a key contributor to building our credibility in that sector.”

A veteran of FitzGerald’s Boston and California offices, Ciccone will move to FitzGerald’s Boston headquarters in early January 2003. He rejoins the agency from Signature BioScience, a biotech company based in San Francisco and focused on drug discovery for the treatment of cancer, where he was director of corporate communications.
