OMAHA—ConAgra Foods, one of America’s leading food companies, has hired Michael Fernandez as senior vice president of corporate affairs and chief communications officer. Fernandez will oversee all internal and external communications for the company, provide public relations counsel to its top executives, and report directly to ConAgra Foods’ chairman and chief executive officer Bruce Rohde.

Fernandez previously served as senior vice president of public affairs at CIGNA Corporation, where he led the company’s public relations, industry affairs, community relations, employee communications, government relations, and investor relations. Prior to that, he was vice president of public relations at U S West from 1996 to 2000, serving as a member of that company’s senior leadership team, directing all public relations activities and overseeing product and brand publicity, the company’s Olympic Games sponsorship and the U S West Foundation.

Says Rohde, “Mike is one of the top communications professionals in the country, is passionate about consumer markets, and brings to us a wealth of experience in managing corporate reputations and driving communications programs which produce results.  He will play a key role in ConAgra Foods’ future and in our strategy to become America’s favorite food company.”

Prior to joining U S WEST in 1996, Fernandez worked for nine years at Eastman Kodak Company in various public relations and marketing assignments.
