LONDON—Edelman, the world’s largest independent public relations firm, announced today that it is acquiring leading British consumer consultancy, Jackie Cooper PR, for an undisclosed sum. The merger brings together two of the leading independent PR companies in the U.K., with combined billings of more than £15 million approximately 160 staff.

“The addition of JCPR, recognized as one of the most creative firms in the U.K., significantly strengthens our U.K. operation and advances our goal to expand our European network,” said Richard Edelman, president & CEO of Edelman. “Clients increasingly want firms that can deliver consistent service around the world.  As the only global independent firm, we are uniquely able to invest in new capabilities despite economic conditions.”

Edelman is highly regarded in the consumer sector in the U.S., with a reputation for innovation and creativity, and was once one of the consumer marketing leaders in the U.K., although its presence in the sector has declined in recent years.

“During the last 17 years we have succeeded in building a passionate and successful business based on hero campaigns for hero brands.  We want to take that same approach for European and global opportunities; Edelman’s brilliant consumer network allows us to do that,” said JCPR founding partner Jackie Cooper.

“We have been approached by many publicly owned conglomerates, but were always put off by their focus on profit margins over creativity, quality and client service. Edelman has the global scale as well as the entrepreneurial and creative spirit we need. It is the only firm we have met that genuinely champions client needs over returns,” added JCPR founding partner Robert Phillips.

The acquisition combines JCPR, with 2003 revenues of £4.3 million from consumer brands clients such as Allied Domecq, Mary Kate & Ashley, Wembley Stadium, Kerzner International Resorts and the Sherry Institute of Spain with Edelman’s existing U.K. operation, which provides expertise in corporate, healthcare, public affairs, technology and financial communications to clients like Pfizer, UPS, A.T.Kearney, AstraZeneca and Burger King.

JCPR founders Jackie Cooper and Robert Phillips will continue to be the creative and strategic driving force behind JCPR, while expanding the agency’s client base, reach and offer. They will report to Edelman European president and CEO David Brain.
