CHICAGO, March 5—The Shanghai-Hong Kong Council for Promotion and Development of the Yangtze Region, a not-for-profit economic development organization, has selected Edelman Public Relations Worldwide to manage an economic development and public relations campaign in North America and Europe. The one-year program is believed to be worth about $500,000.

The Council’s is hoping to attract both multinational corporations and mid-market companies to the region, which covers seven provinces and two cities along the Yangtze, China’s longest river.

“China is the second largest economy in the world based on purchasing power parity,” says Vincent H.S. Lo, president of the Council and chairman of Shui On Holdings. “The changing political and economic climate is ideal for foreign business investment and China’s WTO membership has already prompted interest and inquiries from medium-sized firms, which the Council is well-placed to support.”

He said Edelman’s “expertise in economic development and corporate initiatives in the United States and Europe, along with its strong presence in China and Hong Kong,” was the reason for the firm’s selection.

The program will be led by Edelman’s Chicago-based reputation management practice, and the Edelman account team will include more than a dozen professionals from Chicago and Hong Kong as well as other offices in Europe and Asia.
