FRANKFURT—Edelman has hired Andreas Rink as executive director of its sports marketing unit in Germany, host of the 2006 World Cup. Rink will be based in Edelman’s Hamburg office and will work with Peter Land, global sector head for the firm’s sports marketing division.

Edelman also recently appointed senior vice president Peter Zhang to develop opportunities in China and coordinate sports marketing programs related to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. And Bettina Pieri, a vice president, joined the firm’s Milan office earlier this year to help manage activities surrounding the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin. Edelman currently represents Olympic sponsors Samsung, General Electric and Johnson and Johnson.

Rink most recently has been an independent sports marketing consultant and is currently the manager of Germany’s decathlon star, André Niklaus. He led the marketing team working on Hamburg’s bid to host the 2012 Olympics and served as managing director of Germany‘s Bundesliga basketball team, BS Energy Braunschweig. Earlier in his career, he was sports marketing director at Nike and secretary general of the German Basketball Federation.

“With the 2006 FIFA World Cup coming to Germany and several other major sporting events slated to occur in the European market over the next few years, both German and International  brands are seeking expert counsel as it relates to these events,” says Land.
