NEW YORK, February 8—The Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau has selected the tourism practice at Edelman Public Relations Worldwide to manage its public relations program for 2002, tapping the agency’s destination PR expertise to drive media coverage and consumer awareness of Mexico’s number one destination. The account is worth $400,000.

Cancun attracts more than three million visitors annually, more than half of them coming from the United States.

According to Ana Mari Irabien, director of public relations for the Cancun CVB, “What registered immediately during their creative presentation was Edelman’s proven track record of successful branding campaigns for tourism clients, their ability to hone in on our needs and goals, and their strong travel industry contacts worldwide.”

Edelman will kick off the new campaign with media events in New York City and Chicago, followed by group media familiarization tours focusing on niche-markets: arts and culture travelers, golf and spa, adventure and eco-travel, business travel, romance, and more.
