Edeman Adds Nutrition Specialist Young, Promotes Financial Expert Zilka

NEW YORK—Mary Young is joining Edelman as executive vice president, food and nutrition communications. Young, who has 20 years experience in nutrition communications, served as vice president of nutrition for the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association for the past 16 years. In her role at Edelman she will contribute to thought leadership in food and nutrition as well as use her knowledge of effective integration of nutrition science and food communications.

 

At the NCBA, Young was the strategic leader for nutrition, responsible for all activities regarding the organization’s nutrition policies, health professional education and nutrition communications programs. This included coordinating with NCBA Policy Center on nutrition public policy and government relations activities and overseeing the development of communications strategies and message delivery tactics for nutrition public relations and advertising programs. 

 

Prior to joining NCBA, Young was a nutrition specialist for the University of Chicago Hospitals. 

Edelman’s U.S. food and nutrition practice has 14 credentialed nutrition and public health experts and includes Sylvia Rowe, former CEO of the International Food Information Council, as exclusive strategic counsel to the firm, and Susan Borra, former president of the IFIC Foundation, who joined the firm on January 9.

 

CHICAGO—Edelman has named Jeff Zilka general manager for the firm’s Chicago financial and investor relations practice. Zilka, deputy general manager since joining the firm in 2002, will lead the firm’s Midwest strategic transactions, financial services marketing, financial media relations, financial litigation and investor relations activities, reporting to Kevin Cook, managing director, Edelman Chicago.

 

Zilka has provided counsel and leadership on several high profile strategic transactions and helped clients navigate complex financial issues, including the Troubled Assets Relief Program. He has led communications teams for Tribune Company’s and Merisant Worldwide’s chapter 11 bankruptcies, Nuveen Investments’ sale to Madison Dearborn Partners, WPS Resources’ merger with Peoples Energy, and Esmark’s successful proxy contest for Wheeling-Pitt Steel Corporation.

 

Zilka has more than 25 years of senior-level experience advising U.S. and overseas companies. Prior to joining Edelman in 2002, Zilka was head of U.S. financial communications for Hill & Knowlton; and was chief communications officer of Archipelago, the Chicago-based electronic stock exchange that was acquired by the New York Stock Exchange in 2006.
