LOS ANGELES—John Spelich, most recently vice president of corporate communications for computer maker Gateway, has been named senior vice president at Fleishman-Hillard Los Angeles and director of the office’s litigation support and investor relations practices
According to Richard Kline, Fleishman-Hillard regional president, senior partner, and Los Angeles general manager, Spelich’s “legal training, communications skills, comprehensive communications background and leadership skills will serve as a significant asset to the Fleishman-Hillard Los Angeles office as well as our global network.”
For the past year, Spelich has served as vice president, corporate communications, for Gateway, the third-largest PC company in the United States. As the chief communications officer in the wake of a merger between Gateway and eMachines, Spelich assisted in rebuilding the brand’s image on Wall Street and with other key stakeholders.
Before re-joining Gateway in 2005, Spelich served nearly three years as vice president corporate communications for the Walt Disney Company, and was responsible for managing financial and litigation-related communications, dealing with an attempted hostile takeover, a sustained attack on the CEO and board by two dissident directors; and institutional shareholder unease fueled by attacks from activist labor unions and the governance community.
Earlier in his career, Spelich held a variety of positions with the Ford Motor Company, including director of global news and information, and also served as an attorney in Ford’s product litigation group.
He began his career as a newspaper reporter, writing for the Grand Prairie (Texas) Daily News, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and Detroit Free Press.
