SAN JOSE, August 30—The Hoffman Agency, a Silicon Valley technology PR agency with extensive operations in the Asia-Pacific region, has named Theresa Shen general manager of its Beijing, China. Shen will manage client services, new-business development and staff growth as well as support company expansion in China.

According to agency president Lou Hoffman, Shen’s promotion comes at a crucial juncture for PR in China. The need for strategic communications support has experienced strong growth over the past year and is expected to continue to increase with China’s impending entry into the World Trade Organization. According to a recent survey conducted by the China International Public Relations Association, the Chinese PR industry experienced 50 percent growth from 1999 to 2000.

“High-tech PR is still an emerging sector in China, but we expect the country’s admittance into the WTO will have a tremendous effect on the industry as foreign technology companies race to enter the market and take advantage of the tremendous opportunity,” says Hoffman. “Theresa’s wealth of experience in delivering effective public relations counsel, coupled with her rich knowledge of the local business culture and strong IT background, will enable Hoffman China to stand out from the rest of the pack.”
Shen joined the firm in June 2000 as an account director, and has been serving as the acting GM of Hoffman China since April of this year. Before joining Hoffman, she worked as an account manager in the high-tech sector of Edelman Public Relations in China.
