ISLANDIA, NY—Dan Kaferle, most recently general manager of the Boston office of technology public relations specialist Blanc & Otus, is joining troubled software giant Computer Associates as senior vice president of worldwide public relations. The move reunites Kaferle with Charles Holleran, the Coca-Cola PR executive who joined CA as head of corporate communications earlier this year.
Kaferle worked with Holleran at Digital Equipment Corporation, where as vice president for public relations he was responsible for corporate issues, financial media relations, and worldwide promotion of the Digital brand. The two also worked together at The Travelers, where he was second vice president for external communications.
Kaferle’s other experience includes leading the public relations function at Staples, and 14 years as a journalist.
Computer Associates made more than 50 acquisitions during the 1990s, and grew rapidly to become the world’s third largest software company. But resulting layoffs created employee morale problems, and the company reportedly alienated its customers by pressuring them into large new contracts. The company was also criticized for convoluted accounting, excessive executive compensation, and a board that appeared to rubber-stamp management decisions.
Under new chief executive Sandy Kumar, however, the company has been attempting to remake itself and was recently recognized for having one of the most improved boards by Business Week.
