PHILADELPHIA—Metrocorp, parent company of Philadelphia and Boston magazines, has purchased a majority interest in Slice Communications, a social media and public relations agency. Slice partners Staci Bender and Cassandra Oryl will retain a significant stake in the business and will continue to oversee day-to-day operations, business development, and client service.
The firm will develop and implement social media strategies and projects for Metrocorp print and digital properties, its advertisers and sponsors, and other unrelated businesses. Metrocorp magazines provide reports on crucial and controversial issues confronting the region: business trends, political analysis, metropolitan planning, sociological trends, health and fitness, plus critical reviews of the cultural, sports and entertainment scenes.
“Our magazines have always been about creating and delivering content that starts conversations, and Slice Communications will help us expand on that through strategic social media,” says David Lipson (pictured), president of Metrocorp. "A significant portion of our web traffic is driven by social media now and we view that this partnership will help us further engage and develop our community utilizing the strategy, insights, and analytic tools that Slice brings."
Slice was founded in 2008, working primarily with technology and non-profit clients in the Philadelphia area. It has since evolved to focus exclusively on measurable public relations and social media for clients in the technology, manufacturing, consumer products, professional services, and non-profit sectors. In 2012, the agency worked with Metrocorp’s Be Well Philly brand on a successful social media campaign to identify the region’s “Health Hero,” sponsored by UnitedHealthcare. The firm has also worked with Boston magazine on various projects including Design Home 2012.
