Martin Stepping Down From Top PR Spot at ITT

Thomas Martin, senior vice president of corporate relations for ITT Corporation for the past seven years and one of the most high-profile in-house PR executives in the U.S., will retire from the company by the end of 2006.

WHITE PLAINS, NY—Thomas Martin, senior vice president of corporate relations for ITT Corporation for the past seven years and one of the most high-profile in-house PR executives in the U.S., will retire from the company by the end of 2006. Martin joined ITT in 1996, following an 18-year career at FedEx and was elected a senior vice president in March of 1999 by the company’s board of directors.  

“Over the ten years since I joined, I have seen the company evolve from a loose confederation of unrelated businesses into a strong, unified global organization that is well respected in the markets it serves,” says Martin, who has served three CEOs, and worked with four CFOs and three heads of human resources over the past decade. “With the completion of the major elements of the re-branding of ITT, I feel that this is an appropriate time for me to begin pursuing that chapter. By making this announcement now, I can best assist the company in finding a successor and ensuring a smooth transition.”

“For some time now, I have been planning for the next chapter in my life and career,” says Martin.  “I want to teach, to write, and to find additional ways to give back to the communications profession and to the non-profit world. He has purchased a home in Charleston, SC, and hopes to increase his involvement with the College of Charleston, where he has served on the advisory committee for the communications department.

At ITT, Martin has served as a member of the company’s executive council and has been responsible for worldwide brand and reputation management, public relations, employee communications, government affairs, corporate advertising and community relations. In the last 18 months, Martin has led a global branding initiative for ITT, emphasizing a single organizational identity centered on the ITT name and the accompanying theme line, “Engineered for Life.”

Martin was formerly vice president of corporate communications for Federal Express, where he was responsible for worldwide public relations, investor relations and employee communications for the company.
