NEW YORK—Hill & Knowlton has been retained by Mary Kay to serve as the cosmetics company’s agency of record for promoting its beauty and lifestyle business. Hill & Knowlton will implement an aggressive beauty media campaign to promote Mary Kay’s contemporary products to women of all ages and showcase the company’s career opportunities for women.

The account is a major win for Hill & Knowlton, whose U.S. president and CEO Marylee Sachs had acknowledged the need to build the firm’s marketing communications business. The account will draw on H&K’s experience in marketing to women to “promote the career opportunity and products that truly can make a difference in women’s lives,” says Sachs.

Hill & Knowlton first worked on Mary Kay’s 40th anniversary project in 2003, garnering national media coverage on The View, CBS Early Show and The Today Show, and continued to work on projects for Mary Kay during the agency review process, handling career opportunity public relations.

“Most importantly, we looked to hire a firm that would give us the attention of a boutique, but with the resources, breadth and experience of a big agency,’’ said Shannon Summers, director of corporate communications for Mary Kay. ‘‘We were especially attracted to the company’s proven track record and solid understanding of our business that is critical to achieving our goals.”
