TROY, March 6—Manning Selvage & Lee, already the largest multinational agency in Michigan, has acquired Hass Associates, a Detroit firm with strong ties to the automotive industry and particular expertise in Internet-based communications. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Hass Associates has 45 employees in Ann Arbor and Troy, and revenues of around $5 million. It will merge with MS&L, which in 2000 reported revenues of $8 million from its Detroit operations.

“Hass Associates will strengthen MS&L’s relationships with our clients and help us deliver solutions that move beyond traditional media relations,” says MS&L chairman and CEO Lou Capozzi. “We have been very impressed with the work Mark and his team have done and look forward to utilizing their knowledge throughout the MS&L network.”

Founded in 1994, Hass Associates has expertise in working with corporations to leverage the use of the Internet to reach media, investors, public policy-makers and other key constituencies. The firm has developed a number of technology solutions, including MediaQuotient, a proprietary media research tool that measures corporate reputation. In addition, Hass offers a full range of more traditional media relations and communications capabilities, with expertise in public affairs, technology and the automotive industry.

One of its largest clients is General Motors, which also works with MS&L in Detroit.

“We now have the opportunity to offer our clients access to a high-quality global network while maintaining our commitment to the type of responsive, personal, high-level counsel that is essential to our continued success,” says founder Mark Hass. “No other firm in the region can match these capabilities.”

The new operation will be named Hass MS&L and will be led by Mark Hass, who was named CEO. Stan Stein, currently senior vice president and managing director of MS&L/Detroit, will continue as a managing director of Hass MS&L and will continue to work directly with Capozzi on international business development. Sheila Gruber McLean, senior vice president and partner of Hass Associates, will be a managing director.
