NEW YORK—Fred Muir, an former journalist and veteran public relations counselor, has joined Burson-Marsteller as market leader for Southern California and managing director in its media practice. He will lead BM’s southern California operations while driving new business and client service in the region and will report to Ken Rietz, U.S. CEO and vice chairman.

Prior to joining Burson-Marsteller, Muir was the founder and principal of Fred Muir & Associates, an independent consulting firm specializing in media relations, corporate communications and public affairs. Before opening his own firm, Muir served as a senior vice president at the Los Angeles office of Fleishman-Hillard where he brought his media expertise to a varied group of public, private, corporate and non-profit clients.
His journalism career included positions with the Los Angeles Times and The Wall Street Journal. He was a member of three Pulitzer Prize winning teams.
