LONDON—Weber Shandwick has hired a top advertising executive from WPP Group’s Ogilvy & Mather to become chief operating officer of its U.K. operations. Larissa Joy was vice-chairman of O&M’s U.K. office and was seen as a close ally of group chairman and chief executive Paul Simons, who was dismissed in March.

In her new role at Weber Shandwick, Joy will be responsible for the firm’s finance, IT, human resources and operations teams across the U.K. and Ireland, a major challenge in the wake of the merger of Weber Shandwick and BSMG Worldwide a year ago. The appointment will enable joint chief executives, David Brain and Colin Byrne, to concentrate on customer service.

“We’ve just been through the biggest merger in our industry’s history and we are in better shape than we have ever been, despite the economic slowdown,” Brain told U.K. media. “Larissa will take the commercial operations of our business to the next level, allowing Colin, myself and the client-facing staff to concentrate on achieving outstanding results for clients.”
