NEW YORK—Burson-Marsteller has named integrated marketing and sports and entertainment veteran Chris O’Neill chairman of the U.S. brand marketing practice. O’Neill will be responsible for driving the brand communications strategies for B-M clients and will report to Ken Rietz, worldwide vice chairman and U.S. chief executive.

O’Neill previously served as the director of worldwide communications and marketing for one of the leading sports and entertainment marketing firms, Octagon Worldwide, a unit of Interpublic.

Before joining Octagon, he was the vice president of global marketing communications for MasterCard International where he led the company’s public relations strategy to promote the brand among lifestyle, entertainment, and sports media and generated awareness for the “Priceless” advertising campaign.

“Clients have increasingly become aware that a more comprehensive approach to managing brand awareness is needed in today’s marketplace,” says O’Neill. “Considering the strong foothold Burson-Marsteller has in the area of brand communications, this practice is extremely well positioned to offer new and innovative solutions to companies seeking a more sophisticated brand marketing capability.”
