NEW YORK—Rio Tinto, the London-based global mining giant, has selected Hill & Knowlton for corporate communications, media relations and public affairs in North America. H&K’s initial assignment is to handle media relations and public affairs in Canada, the U.S. and France for Rio Tinto’s $38 billion friendly acquisition of Alcan, the premier Montreal-based aluminum producer.

“We were impressed by the caliber of the people on the H&K team and their energy, excitement and knowledge of the mining industry,” says Andrew Vickerman, global head of communications and external relations for Rio Tinto. “We believe that H&K will play a key role in working with our team in the US and Canada to build our brand and corporate reputation, and emphasize our global commitments to environmentally responsible sustainable development for all of our mining operations.”

Alcan selected Rio Tinto as the successful bidder in fighting off a hostile takeover from Alcoa. Rio Tinto’s cash offer was the largest mining deal ever and represented a 32.8 percent premium over Alcoa’s offer.  Rio Tinto is also working with H&K sister agency Finsbury in London and Paris on the deal.
