NEW YORK—Financial and corporate communications specialist Citigate Sard Verbinnen has opened an office in California, the firm’s third. Paul Kranhold, former vice president of corporate public relations at AT&T, has joined Citigate Sard Verbinnen as a managing director and will head the west coast office, located in San Francisco.

He will be joined in the new office by Matt Benson, a principal and five-year veteran of the firm in New York.

According to George Sard, chairman and CEO, “California has long been one of the nation’s top markets and is particularly important as a hub for finance, technology, entertainment, and manufacturing and for access to Asian markets. Although we have served clients on the west coast for more than 12 years, establishing a physical presence in the region is a strategic move that we have been contemplating for some time.”

Before joining Citigate Sard Verbinnen, Kranhold served as vice president of corporate public relations at AT&T, where he was responsible for the company’s financial communications, media relations and executive communications teams. During his tenure he managed corporate communications on complex earnings announcements, management changes, litigation, government investigations, and the pending merger agreement with SBC.

Before joining AT&T, Kranhold was senior vice president for public affairs at Fleishman-Hillard in San Francisco, working for clients including The Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones, Ross Stores, SBC, Texas Instruments, Motorola and Intel. Earlier in his career, he was vice president for corporate communications at The Irvine Company and spent several years in the public sector, serving as press secretary to California Governor Pete Wilson.
