AUSTIN—Reed Byrum, a veteran technology public relations professional and expert in corporate governance issues, has entered into an “of counsel” agreement with GCI Group. Byrum will be based in GCI’s Austin office, working closely with Jeff Hunt, president of its GCI Read-Poland unit.

“This innovative relationship with an industry leader of Reed’s caliber will enable us to more quickly engage with our clients on some of the industry’s most pressing issues,” said Bob Feldman, president and CEO, GCI Group. “His expertise and his solid reputation will also open up opportunities for us to demonstrate the strength of our Texas presence and the depth of our global network. “

Byrum specializes in counseling high-tech companies in governance and in public and analyst relations. In addition to counseling activities, Byrum currently is the national president of the Public Relations Society of America and is spearheading the organization’s new diversity, advocacy, and professional development programs.

Byrum lead Silicon Valley PR firm Byrum & Associates, where he conducted what is believed to be the first Internet-based best practices study of communications. He also served as manager, director and vice president of public relations and marketing communications for high-tech companies including GE Capital Computer Leasing and Network Equipment Technology.

In 1998, Byrum left the Silicon Valley to direct corporate public relations and serve as spokesperson during the turnaround at EDS in Plano, Tex. He moved to Trilogy Software as a managing director in fall 2000 and will continue to serve as a counselor to the company.
