SINGAPORE—Skype has assigned PR duties in China and Singapore to Waggener Edstrom, following a competitive review.

It is understood that Skype did not retain PR agencies in the two markets prior this decision, but does work with Bite Communications elsewhere in the region. Waggener Edstrom already handles much of Skype's global PR duties.

Microsoft-owned Skype operates in China via a special version developed in partnership with Hong Kong's TOM Group. The service has faced scrutiny over claims that it monitors users conversations.

Skype's Asia-Pacific presence, meanwhile, is led from Singapore. Despite facing numerous local competitors in the region, Skype's user numbers in Asia continue to grow.

Earlier this year, the company shifted UK PR duties to Text 100. Prior to that, it reworked its communications leadership under Eric Brown, who arrived from Yahoo.
