DENVER, July 26—Joan Walker, former head of corporate communications at Ameritech and more recently at Pharmacia, has joined troubled telecommunications company Qwest Communications as senior vice president of corporate communications. The appointment reunites her with Dick Notebaert, who was her CEO at Ameritech and who was recently named chairman and chief executive at Qwest.

Walker was one of three senior executives appointed by Notebaert shortly after taking the helm. Another was Oren Shaffer, another Ameritech veteran who was named chief financial officer.

Walker was most recently senior vice president of global public affairs at Pharmacia. She had held a similar role at Monsanto prior to the company’s merger with Pharmacia & Upjohn in April of 2000. Before joining Monsanto, Walker was senior vice president corporate communications at Ameritech from 1996 to 1999, and president of Bozell Public Relations, which later became part of BSMG Worldwide.

She succeeds Michael P. Tarpey who announced his retirement last April.

Walker told reporters that Qwest should not be lumped with companies like WorldCom. “This is a company that’s fundamentally very sound. It’s a company that’s been caught in a huge downdraft in the industry.”
