WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments has contracted with the Consortium for Risk & Crisis Communications to provide a number of risk and crisis communications services for a new pilot program, the Cities Readiness Initiative, which will help cities increase their capacity to deliver medicines and medical supplies during a large-scale public health emergency.

Specifically, the consortium will provide a research-based communications plan; develop messages for the media and the public using risk communication principles and market research; develop a number of collateral and media materials such as model news releases, fact sheets, and checklists; and design and produce public service announcements to enhance community education.

Additionally, the consortium will train spokespersons for CRI and develop a model for future, proactive public education campaigns about CRI.
