SOCHI, RUSSIA—Weber Shandwick has been selected provide public relations support to the Russian city of Sochi as it prepared its bid for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Weber Shandwick will work alongside IMG Consulting, which is the lead marketing and technical agency for the bid.

Sochi, an international resort by the Black Sea in the south of Russia, launched its bid in July 2005 with the full backing of the Russian government, its National Olympic Committee and the Mayor of Sochi. Weber Shandwick has been appointed to provide PR and communications support for the bid committee on a global basis.

According to Dmitry Chernyshenko, CEO of the bid committee, “Sochi already has all the ingredients to host an incredible Games: the unique geographical setting of the city, a well thought through organizational plan, strong local support, a professional team of Russian experts and the unilateral backing of the Russian government and National Olympic Committee. The appointment of IMG and Weber Shandwick will help us to tell our compelling story to the Olympic Family.”

The appointment comes as the Sochi 2014 team prepares to leave for Turin to observe the organization of the 2006 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, which begin on 10 February.
