SAN FRANCISCO  — Mozilla’s VP of communications Leslie Nakajima has resigned from the nonprofit just as its newly-appointed CEO is facing public backlash for his support of a 2008 California measure banning gay marriage.

Nakajima told the Holmes Report her departure was “coincidental timing” and not related to the outcry around Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich’s support of Proposition 8 in 2008. To clarify her personal position on the topic, she pointed to an editorial she broadcast in 2004 supporting marriage equality. On March 29, Mozilla published a blog post clarifying its support for LGBT equality as well.

Nakajima joined Mozilla — the maker of the Firefox web and mobile browser — in 2012 and her last day is April 1. She said building out Mozilla’s global comms team and launching Firefox OS campaigns worldwide were among her major accomplishments in the role. Her next venture is yet to be determined.

“I felt like it was a good time to take a break, and look at what new venture might need communications help as the world of cloud, wearables and social continues to expand,” she said.

Before joining Mozilla, Nakajima worked in several marketing and communications functions at Nokia. She’s also held senior posts at Edelman, Sybase (now owned by SAP) and Openwave Systems.
