In just two years since its founding in May of 2003 by António Cunha Vaz and Armandino Geraldes, Cunha Vaz & Associados has established itself as one of the best independent public relations firms in the Portuguese market, with revenues of around €3 million and a client list that includes six of the largest 20 companies on the Portuguese stock exchange. The firm has also been named among the three best public relations firms in Portugal by Meios & Publicidade, the nation’s largest and most respected marketing and advertising publication.
Before launching his eponymous firm, Cunha Vaz served in government (as a deputy at the Portuguese Foreign Ministry and with the European Commission) and picked up corporate experience in European affairs for Espirito Santo Commerce for European affairs. Geraldes, his partner, began his career as a journalist and was a marketing manager at Sonae Group and media relations manager with the Oni Group. The third member of the leadership team is Assunção Sà da Bandeira, who founded one of Portugal’s pioneering PR firms, BA&N, and is a past president of Apecom, the Portuguese association of public relations firms.
The firm’s focus is on corporate and financial communications, primarily for publicly-traded company, and on public affairs and policy communications for corporate and public sector clients. Major clients include Caixa Geral de Depósitos, the state owned bank; the Mundial Confiança insurance company; large listed companies such Cofina, Altri, Sonaecom and Reditus; the Portuguese Association of Insurance Companies; international companies such as Cisco Systems, Amadeus, Barclays Bank, and Barclaycard; Sport Lisboa e Benfica ( the largest football club in Portugal); and pharmaceutical giants Schering, Roche, Astra Zeneca and Boehringher.
Interesting assignments over the past 12 months included the acquisition of KPN Quest by Sonaecom in Portugal; investor relations efforts on behalf of Cofina and Reditus; international public relations coordination for the UEFA Euro 2004 championships; the launch of Barclaycard in Portugal; and the election campaign of the Mayor of Lisbon.
