Full-service firm Pierpont Communications

Houston, Austin

Outside of the area directly affected, no city in America felt the impact of Hurricane Katrina more than Houston, which within days had opened its doors to those fleeing the devastation, and as Houston’s largest public relations firm Pierpoint Communications found itself at the center of some of the communications challenges created as a consequence. Longtime client Hibernia Bank, headquartered in New Orleans, turned to Pierpoint to help with critical employee communications and customer service notifications, while the Harris County Housing Authority joined forces with city and state agencies and FEMA to create the Joint Hurricane Housing Task Force, retaining Pierpoint to supervise and execute all media relations and activities, managing an ever-changing crisis situation.

But Pierpoint, a full service firm with public relations, public affairs and investor relations capabilities, is used to crises. The firm’s 2005 work also included helping Reliant Energy, the largest retail electric service provider in Texas, manage the fallout from a planned electric service rate increase; working with Oracle on a bid for a local contract and later on homeland security issues; and assisting the Texas Association of Realtors through complex legislative issues, including the impact of a real estate transfer tax and the urgent need for property tax relief to close the home ownership gap in Texas. “This is a time of critical change for the real estate industry and the experienced communication strategists from Pierpont are a perfect match for our needs,” says Myra Jolivet, chief communications officer for the association. “They are at the top of their game and we are never disappointed in their guidance.”

Not surprisingly, given the nature of its work, Pierpoint boasts a strong senior leadership team, led by founder Philip Morabito, who honed his skills on Madison Avenue with Robert Marston & Associates, working for major corporations such as Pillsbury, Levi Strauss, and Dean Witter. Susan Gramatges, chief operating officer, has been with Pierpont since 1992 and has more than 25 years of combined corporate and agency experience. They are supported by six senior vice presidents—Pegge Bogle, Pamela McConathy, Sally Ramsay, Michael Russell, Nancy Sims, and Ben Wheatley—each with at least 20 years industry experience.

The breadth of experience and expertise represented by those executives enables Pierpoint to work across a broad range of industries, including healthcare, professional sports, biotechnology, energy, petrochemicals, law, technology, accounting, insurance, real estate, banking and finance, defense, and construction. Key clients include Hibernia Bank, Reliant Energy, Service Corporation International, Oracle, Kanaly Trust and Money Management International, while new additions such as law firm Boyar & Miller, helicopter services provider Bristow Group and software company Merrick Systems helped fuel impressive 33 percent growth in 2005.
