Howard Rubenstein is one of the legends of modern public relations, a supremely well-connected media relations professional with a client list of celebrities and business leaders—from George Steinbrenner to Leona Helmsley to Donald Trump to Rupert Murdoch—and an uncanny ability to craft media strategy and persuade individual reporters to tell his clients’ stories. Over the past 46 years, he has built his firm, Rubenstein Associates, into one of the largest in New York City, with expertise not only in the publicity arena, but also in public affairs and corporate communications in the financial services, entertainment, real estate and healthcare arenas.
In recent years, the firm has added a technology capability, working with both emerging and mature companies in the new economy, adding clients in the Internet industry and providing enabling technologies and infrastructure, ranging from telecommunications companies to the financial and professional service firms that specialize in the tech sector. Clients range from the New York Yankees and the YankeesNets organization to Long Term Capital Management to News Corp. and BMW. Rubenstein also provides promotional support to China Expo, and has been working with the Israeli government to address perceived media bias in the U.S.
While Rubenstein Associates does not report its revenues, it ended 2000 with about 185 employees, thanks to growth of around 20 percent. It also added several senior executives, from a variety of backgrounds: agency, corporate, non-profit, and government.
