Standing Partnership

Strong regional generalist

St. Louis

Cathy Dunkin founded Standing Partnership in October 1991 after holding management positions with public relations agencies and corporations in St. Louis, Chicago and Dallas and with a clear vision of the kind of entrepreneurial leader she wanted to be. She built her firm, which has grown to become one of the leading independent public relations agencies in St. Louis, on strong values (excellent client service, honesty, integrity, respect) and the kind of employee-friendly culture that earned it recognition as one of our Best Boutique Agencies to Work For. Said one respondent to our survey: “I think Standing has figured out what a lot of other agencies haven’t: in the long run, happy employees equal happy clients.”

Standing Partnership typically represents clients with their headquarters in the Midwest, or companies looking for a higher profile in the region. Last year saw exceptional growth, with revenues up 33 percent to around $3.2 million. New business came from multiple sectors—industrial, professional services and travel and tourism were particularly hot—but the majority of clients were looking for strategic counsel and issues management expertise as well as media relations capabilities.

Says Beth Rusert, vice president of public relations and corporate communications at longtime client Maritz: “Standing Partnership has been instrumental in helping Maritz build—from the ground up—a comprehensive communications program that includes both employee communications and public relations outreach on behalf of five Maritz businesses. Throughout the process, everyone I’ve ever worked with at Standing Partnership has been of the highest quality… The counsel we’ve received has been exceptionally good and is consistently backed by solid implementation.”

In addition to Maritz, major clients include UniGroup, Monsanto, Partnership for a Drug Free America, Harrah’s, Parents as Teachers National Center and other industry leaders. Interesting assignments in 2005 included crisis counsel and community and government relations support for Praxair Distribution, after a major fire and explosion at its St. Louis distribution facility caused damage to the nearby and recently revitalized historic neighborhood of Lafayette Square.
