Professional and ethical standards in the former Soviet markets have improved dramatically in recent years but there are still firms in Kiev, Moscow and elsewhere prepared to “pay for play,” offering financial incentives to journalists or media companies in exchange for coverage. That’s a firing offence at The Willard Group which has taken a strong stand on such issues—chairman and chief executive Mike Willard recently issued a blistering attack on U.S. multinationals accused of ethical lapses in their domestic markets—and has adhered to a policy of complete transparency in order to differentiate itself from some of its competitors and to appeal to western multinationals with strict ethical guidelines of their own.
