WOONSOCKET, RI--Drugstore and benefits company CVS Caremark has brought in Edelman to handle some of its corporate PR duties, following a competitive review.

The firm prevailed after a multi-agency pitch, revealed by the Holmes Report earlier this year.

It is understood that Edelman's duties include executive visibility and strategic media relations support.

CVS Caremark VP of corporate communications Carolyn Castel told the Holmes Report that Edelman had been selected "to support a portion of its corporate public relations needs."

The company's relationship with incumbent firm Weber Shandwick, which covers other areas of corporate PR, is expected to continue.

CVS Caremark is described as the largest company that has operations solely in the US. Its CVS/pharmacy retail division runs more than 7,300 CVS/pharmacy and Longs Drug stores, and it also operates the retail-based MinuteClinic walk-in medical center in 600 of these locations.

In addition, CVS Caremark's pharmacy services division provides prescription benefit management solutions. The company's 2011 revenues of $107bn are almost evenly split between its retail and pharmacy units.
