WASHINGTON, DC—Delano Lewis, former US ambassador to the Republic of South Africa and former president and chief executive officer of National Public Radio, is joining APCO Worldwide as senior counselor to the company’s Global Political Strategies unit and a member of its international advisory council.

Prior to his diplomatic appointment by US President Bill Clinton, Lewis held multiple roles in the federal government. He served as an attorney for both the Department of Justice and the office of compliance in the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, associate director of the US Peace Corps in Nigeria, and country director of Peace Corps in Uganda.

He was a legislative assistant to US Sen. Edward W. Brooke (R-Mass.) and chief of staff for Delegate Walter Fauntroy of the District of Columbia. He was also an executive with C&P Telephone Company in Washington, DC, a subsidiary of AT&T, and served as president and chief executive officer of Bell Atlantic’s (now Verizon) Washington operations.
