Michael Mand

Chief Communications Officer
CAA

Michael Mand heads all corporate communications for CAA — the world’s largest entertainment and sports agency that represents some of the most recognized names and faces on the planet. CAA has more recently expanded beyond talent representation to strategic marketing and other startup ventures to diversify its revenue streams.

Mand joined in 2001 after an unconventional start to his career. He started his career at Burson-Marsteller in New York — followed by a string of “odd jobs” that contributed to the depth and thoughtfulness Mand brings to the craft. After moving to Los Angeles, he worked at MSLGroup before joining CAA.

He leads a team responsible for all external and internal communications, in addition to a series of other corporate functions. He also advises high-profile talent, sports clients, and corporate clients on a range of strategic communications issues.

Please share a notable career highlight.
My first business trip was to deliver a forgotten package to the Bahamas because FedEx couldn't get it there by 9am.  I'm not sure that's a highlight, but it was an auspicious start.

What is the most rewarding/challenging aspect about a career in communications/marketing?
Generating the best opportunities for a client to share their story and shape a conversation is always rewarding. Internally, it's particularly gratifying to play an instrumental role in nurturing our deeply collaborative culture.

What skills/experience will the CCO of the future need that may not be required today?
Creating a steady supply of original, target-specific content will be critical. Think like a marketer, act like a producer.

What skill/experience is required of today's CCO that might not be as relevant in the future?
There will be less reliance on traditional media relations, and an increase in the value of other channels.

Who or what inspires you to be your best?
My colleagues and our clients are the best in the world at what they do. I'm inspired to live up to that standard every day.

What is on your must-read/view/listen to list?
I have an insatiable appetite for good podcasts - especially sports, politics, and current events.

Most interesting place you've traveled to?
A witchdoctor's cave on a mountainside in a remote part of Guatemala.  Getting lost can get land you in some interesting places.
