CHARLESTON, SC—The College of Charleston has named Thomas Martin, senior vice president and director of corporate relations at ITT Corporation, as the first executive-in-resident at the College’s department of communication. Martin is currently co-chair of the department’s advisory council and has been a frequent visiting guest lecturer at the College. He will begin his formal faculty appointment in August 2007, following his retirement from ITT.

“Tom Martin is an outstanding executive and leader in the communication profession,” says Brian McGee, chair of the Department of Communication. “To our knowledge, only a few other communication or journalism programs have ever appointed a continuing executive-in-residence. Our students will benefit from Tom’s continuing presence on campus and his focus on the role played by communication professionals in the business world.”

Martin will work with the students, faculty and administration of the College to enhance the relationship between the department and the business community and to help students make the transition from the classroom into the business world. He also will lecture in undergraduate classes and graduate seminars and continue to serve as co-chair of the advisory council.
