NEW YORK—At a time when many of its peers continue to downsize, New York consumer public relations specialist Marina Maher Communications has announced the addition of Donna Renella as director of recruitment.
According to agency founder and president Marina Maher, Renella will focus on attracting top quality talent to the agency, which has several positions open after a year of solid growth in 2002.
Says Maher, “I feel people are our number one asset, and there are a lot of good people out there. We need someone to be focused on meeting with those people and bringing them in to MMC.”
Maher says she believes other firms—including many large, publicly traded companies—have started cutting muscle as well as fat. “I think there’s a lot of talent out there. When there are waves of layoffs, you always cut your bottom 10 percent first, but by the second or third wave you start trimming very close to the bone, especially if the cuts are being dictated by someone from a holding company.”
Renella joins MMC from Hill & Knowlton, where she was senior managing director of recruitment. In that respect, says Maher, she fits the profile of people who have been most successful at MMC: people with big agency experience who are looking for a more entrepreneurial environment. Previously, she was director of field recruitment with Airborne Express and a founding partner of recruitment firm O’Hare and Associates.
Maher emphasizes that Renella will be focused almost exclusively, and not on broader human resources issues. The firm may appoint a new HR director soon, however, after Ivette Sanz, who had held that position, returned to account responsibilities, as a vice president working on the Clairol and Dawn accounts.
