PORTLAND, January 14—Waggener Edstrom has become the latest technology public relations for to formalize a practice dedicated to bioscience communications. Its new division, Waggener Edstrom Bioscience, has signed two neuroscience companies as clients: Cortex Pharmaceuticals of Irvine, Calif., and Stem Cell Pharmaceuticals of Seattle.

The practice also supports the Oregon Bioscience Association and BioLab, a nonprofit biotechnology organization located in Seattle.

Waggener Edstrom Bioscience will offer public and investor relations strategies to biotechnology, medical device, pharmaceutical and e-health companies as well as point-of-care and research institutions. The practice is focused on building established science companies into global brands as well as extending brand awareness for start-up companies with high-potential research platforms.

The downturn in the technology sector has prompted several technology firms to look at the medical technology and biotech sectors, with firms such as Brodeur Worldwide, FitzGerald Communications and Sterling Communications establishing new practices last year.

“The discoveries coming out of bioscience companies and research institutions will fundamentally change our quality of life during the next 20 years,” says Melissa Waggener, president and CEO of Waggener Edstrom.  “Acceptance and support of the industry depends largely on whether these complex discoveries are communicated responsibly and effectively to the right audiences, a commitment we make to each client.”

The practice will be led by vice president Jenny Moede, who has more than 14 years of experience providing public relations and public affairs counsel to companies in the technology, environmental science, bioscience and banking industries.
