Holmes Report

Corporate communications and reputation management consultancy

Founded in 1995, Pohjoisranta has rapidly established itself as one of the pre-eminent public relations firms in Finland in terms of size (it currently ranks number three in the market, with fee income of €2.1 million), quality (it was named Communication Partner of the Year by the Finnish Association of Communicators, ProCom, in 2004), and thought leadership (it was the first PR firm in Finland to publish its own corporate social responsibility report, back in 2002, has been a leader in the field of reputation measurement, and in 2006 published a book on the subject of reputation management).

The firm’s senior team can draw on many years of experience in communications consulting. Managing director Jouni Heinonen worked as a consultant and researcher at Inforviestintä and as an information officer at forest industry giant Repola Corporation before launching Pohjoisranta. Partner and co-founder Esa Laurila previously managed his own firm, PR Agency Esa Laurila and was a journalist for national newspaper Uusi Suomi, covering politics and economics. The third partner and co-founder Tommi Siikaniva was consultant at AC-Tiedotus and worked as press officer for the Commission on Security & Co-operation in Europe. Other senior staff include partners Riitta Laine and Pekka Aula and general manager of the firm’s Oulu office Kari Arokylä.

The firm is focused on the reputation management arena, focusing less on traditional media relations and more on business communications. Today, the firm has seven core competencies: reputation strategy, research, financial communications, media relations, publications, crisis communications and corporate social responsibility. The firm has its own proprietary reputation measurement system, RepMap, developed by Aula (also a professor of online communications in the Department of Communication at the University of Helsinki). A new service addition this year is a new digital tool for assessing reputation risks in crisis situations.

Major clients are Personec, Pfizer, Nokia, Fortum, and Huhtamaki, and new additions over the past 12 months include Fortum, Finnish Road Administration, OP Bank, Lindorf, Huhtamaki, MSD, Abbott, Reuma hospital and Finpro. Many of the firm’s most interesting assignments—in the crisis communications and mergers and acquisitions arenas—are confidential in nature, but one high-profile program in last year involved coordinating the visit to Finland—just ahead of the country’s presidency of the EU—of Robert Amsterdam, attorney for imprisoned Russian oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky. The firm was able to secure meetings with Finnish MPs and academics, as well as major media.

Pohjoisranta is the exclusive Finnish affiliate of international public relations firm Burson-Marsteller.
