Strategic communications and crisis management firm

Solomon McCown president Helene Solomon and executive vice president Ashley McCown have an expertise in crisis communications that dates back more than a decade, to 1994, when two young women were killed and five other injured during an attack on a Planned Parenthood clinic in Brookline, Mass. Without a crisis plan, Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts needed help managing the media frenzy that followed the shootings, making sure its messaging was clear and consistent, that women knew its commitment to providing a full range of health services was unchanged, and that the victims were remembered as real people rather than mere statistics.

Today the firm they manage continues to provide crisis counseling as part of a suite of strategic corporate communications services to national and regional corporations as well as to “mission-focused organizations” in the not-for-profit sector. The firm’s has additional experience in real estate and development issues, public policy, and litigation communications. (To underscore its thought leadership in these and other arenas, Solomon McCown holds a series of events under the SM& Presents banner, bringing together experts for discussion and debate around topical issues and challenging public relations problems.

Since 2003, Solomon McCown has been listed among Boston’s top 25 public relations firms by the Boston Business Journal, and its ranking is likely to increase this year, after a 24 percent increase in revenues—with the real estate practice doubling in size and the public affairs practice growing at an impressive rate. Clients include Beacon Capital Partners (for crisis communication planning), NStar, National Grid, Simon Property Group, Tweeter Entertainment Group, New Boston State Hospital, CEOs for Cities, and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

“Working with Solomon McCown is a partnership in every sense of that word,” says Gary Hofstetter, president of New Boston Management Services. “SM& operates as a productive, thoughtful member of our strategic team with the attentiveness and insight to understand what is important to us.”
