Public affairs and marketing communications
Like many of the leading independent firms in the Washington market these days—and with 15 people, the firm consistently ranks in the top 20—The Aker Partners divides its time between the public affairs and marketing communications realms. Historically best known for its work in the healthcare sector, the firm has expanded its capabilities to include expertise in energy, environmental, professional services marketing, and product marketing, as well as a sophisticated NetPR offering, and entices clients with an approach founder and CEO Colburn Aker calls Partner Directed Communications and Marketing—which means either Aker or one of his leadership team takes a hands-on role on every account.
Aker is a 30-year veteran of the PR business and a former deputy manager of the Washington office of Hill & Knowlton. David Narsavage, senior partner, is another H&K alum and also worked at Amtrak, where he led employee communications, while the firm’s other senior partner, Carolyn Myles, was a reporter on the PR industry and has marketing communications experience.
Revenues were up about 15 percent last year, with new business coming from Ford Motor Company (the introduction of the Escape Hybrid to members of Congress) and Honeywell, which tapped the firm to develop an environmental position statement. Aker, meanwhile, was named president of the Public Relations Global Network, a group of independent firms that offers Aker clients international reach.
