With the accounting profession in crisis as a result of the questions raised by the Enron crisis, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants turned to The Weiser Group. It was a natural choice: Weiser has an unparalleled track record in the financial services sector; strong relationships with the financial markets and the regulators who oversee them; and solid experience in the crisis management category.

Even without the AICPA assignment, 2001 was an eventful year for The Weiser Group, as the firm reinvented itself to focus more intensely on the high-value strategic public relations end of its business. It added Jeff Zilka, former head of the financial communications practice at Hill & Knowlton, as managing partner for client services and to build a mergers and acquisitions and transactions practice. At the same time it promoted Dennis McSweeney, head of the IR practice, to partner, reflecting the depth of its counseling experience. And Weiser also added a Washington, D.C., office, led by Joy Howell, former head of communications for the Federal Communications Commission.

As a result of the changes, Weiser saw revenues decline by about 20 percent for the year, with most of the losses resulting from the contraction of the advertising side of its business. The firm’s core financial service industry business saw healthy growth, with new clients including the National Venture Capital Association (helping position the VC industry in the wake of the new bear market), Liquidnet, and Equitec. Weiser also saw growth in the technology category, specifically web-based teleconferencing and middleware for the financial services industry.
